Atari Anniversary Advance

Game profile: Atari Anniversary Advance for Nintendo Game Boy Advance

Now this is a trip down Memory Lane worth taking. Atari Anniversary Advance features some of the most addictive games from the 1970's and 1980's, namely Asteroids, Battlezone, Centipede, Missile Command, Super Breakout and Tempest. If none of the aforementioned games appeal, you can't be too fond of video games, that's what we say. We also say thankyou to Digital Eclipse, the developer responsible for bringing this to the GBA.

Let's have a brief reminder of what these six if the best are all about then. Asteroids is where you pilot a triangular spaceship through deep space avoiding huge space boulders and enemy craft while blowing them apart.

Battlezone puts you in a combat vehicle and sets you down in a landscape populated by enemy tanks, in a situation where it's simply kill or be killed.

Centipede is an ingenious twist on the Space Invaders game, where said 100-legged creeper makes his way from the top of the screen. You shoot at the 'pede from the foot of the screen, but things ain't so simple. This centipede breaks away in different directions as you fire away at his body - in a matter of second, you have bits of creepy-crawly all over the screen.

Missile Command is another twist on the Space Invader theme. Again, you fire your missiles from the foot of the screen, at the encroaching hordes of alien invaders. They're not shy of firing back, and in your defence, you can intercept their fire with your quartet of launchers.

We reckon that Super Breakout is the business, and do you know why? It's because it's such a simple premise. A bat and ball experience, you have to keep the ball in play and break through the walls above you. Getting the angles right as the 'bricks' disappear is just the beginning of a long night...

And finally, Tempest. The mere mention of Tempest still gets folk of a certain age all misty-eyed. Tempest is where you take control of an unusually shaped craft and stared deep into the blackness of space, desperately trying to fend off the attacking enemy ships flying toward you via a polygonal tunnel. Definitely the most difficult game to get to grips with even now, Tempest was one for the hardcore all those years ago. Now everyone can have a go!
