Looney Tunes Space Race

Game profile: Looney Tunes Space Race for Sony PlayStation 2

Infogrames' Looney Tunes franchise has been exploited to some degree over the past several years, but often with good reason. These games, no matter what genre, are extremely popular with the kids. And the PlayStation 2 release of the Dreamcast original, Space Race, is a fine example of how much fun video games can be, regardless of age.

Perhaps the most relevant aspect to Looney Tunes Space Race is the presentation afforded by the developers. In-game environments and menu systems are wonderfully bright and varied and colourful. What's more, the cell-shaded Jet Set Radio-esque design gives Space Race an authentic, hand-drawn feel.

But Space Race is all about racing, right? Doing away with karts and cars, the playable Looney Tunes cast do their racing in undersized futuristic hovermobiles, which is quite humorous in itself.

After choosing your favourite Looney Tunes character, which include good old Sylvester, Daffy Duck and the legendary Bugs Bunny, you can begin any of several race modes. You have the usual one-player championship, time trial, and two-player options, as well as a series of scenario-based races that are simply tweaks of the main game. It's just a matter of fulfilling the requirements of the race at hand. But because all racers have pretty much the same handling mechanics and statistics, winning a race is down to your own skill. There are no cheats or shortcuts really, it's all about the race.

And with that in mind, Looney Tunes Space Race is clearly a challenging game, but it also appeals to a broad range of games players. Now, you can't really ask much more than that, can you?
