Sonic Adventure 2

Game profile: Sonic Adventure 2 for Nintendo GameCube

Sega's decision to leave hardware development behind may have been a disappointment to hardcore fans of the company, but to owners of other platforms, it marks a positive change in Sega's history and video games as a whole. It was once unthinkable, but Sega's very own mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, is coming to Nintendo GameCube. How about that?

Originally released on Dreamcast, Sonic Adventure 2 has been updated for its migration to Nintendo's cube-shaped device. Graphically, the 128-bit Sonic sequel is a direct port of the Dreamcast version and looks identical. The game controls are more fluid, thanks to Nintendo's expertise in pad-design, and there's even an all new two-player battle mode option to entice previous owners of Sega's ill-fated console.

Dr Robotnik is up to his usual evil tricks again and it is your responsibility to put an end to his ways for good. Sonic has learned a few new tricks for his second outing; he can now grind along the odd railing and even somersault like a gymnast. In fact, in the early levels you'll be snowboarding down city streets, racing down the sides of skyscrapers and running towards the screen whilst avoiding out of control 18-wheelers - sweet!

Now, despite the lack of effort put into the GameCube transition of Sonic Adventure 2, the graphical quality is still outstanding, because the DC original was such a beautiful title. Sonic is once again fast and smooth. Levels are full of extra details like buildings and structures and these don't affect game speed or overall performance whatsoever. Why the Dreamcast didn't sell in bucketloads is beyond us.

There are several different playable characters that each give a unique slant on gameplay. Sonic is fast, Tails gets more puzzles to solve and Knuckles has to find hidden gems. Completing Sonic 2 will take some time but it is more than likely that you will enjoy every single minute of it. A great GameCube launch title.
